Upcoming Saturday Speaker Series

BAC's Saturday Speaker Series Presents:
The Rise, Fall and Redemption of Art and Culture
By Benjamin Riggs
Saturday, March 29th @ 2pm in the Gallery Fine Art Center

What does it mean to be culturally bankrupt?
"Popular culture is not Lady Gaga. It isn't Shepard Fairey or Bill O'Reilly. That is consumer culture. Consumer culture is based on consumption. Its like a Styrofoam cup, we use it once and throw it away. Real pop culture is the hymns your grandmother hummed when she made biscuits. Those are the songs and the stories that live in each and every one of us. That biscuit recipe is pop culture, because it is passed down from one generation to the next. To mistake consumer culture for your culture is to be culturally bankrupt.
We have forgotten how to make biscuits. We have been told that it isn't important, "Just run to the store and pick some up." But we all remember how important it was to sit down at grandma's table. We have to recover that for ourselves, for our kids, for the next generation. That is culture." -Benjamin Riggs. The Gallery Fine Art Center is sponsored in part by contributions from Meredith Hamrick, Ken & Sharon McGivney, Marcy Everett, and Airline Plaza.

MARCH 21-22-23
Phoenix actor, Raymond King Shurtz, performs his solo musical piece, BOHEMIAN COWBOY for three performances only continuing The Rep's Cabaret Series. The story begins in 2005 when Shurtz's father drove his truck six miles into the Nevada desert near the Valley of Death and vanished. No information, nor his body or his final wishes were ever discovered. BOHEMIAN COWBOY is the search for him in the theatrical realm.
With the help of Hamlet, Hamlet's Father, Christ, Clyde King and an array of characters, Shurtz's search for his father---who was a cowboy, carpenter, honky-tonk singer, bohemian and disappearing specialist-is a fascinating and entertaining evening of theatre.

BAC and Community Trust Bank Present the Art of Susan Duke

The artwork of artist Susan Duke-Posey is currently on display at the East 70th branch of Community Trust Bank.  When asked about her work she responded “In each painting I want to transport the viewer into a world of beauty and energy. I have chosen to create my original Impressionist works in oil on canvas, applied with lavish palette knife strokes. This challenging use of the medium imparts a passionate vitality and immediacy to each subject. The unique textural appearance appears to alter in various light affording ever-changing glimpses of new detail, depth and color. The juxtaposition of freedom and control in this style of painting convey and relate to the contrasts and continuums that give our lives balance.
“I love our earth home and want to express that intensely deep spiritual feeling which inherently connects all of us to each other and to our environment. These paintings should open a door for the imagination to pass through, giving the viewer a moment of uplifting serenity – a place to gain rejuvenation and renew personal power. The essential essence of each painting simultaneously commemorates a particular place in time and reaches for the timeless.”

Susan’s work will be on display from now until May 30th please stop by during regular lobby hours and take a look at this unique work.
